Essential Driver Training (EDT) is a course of 12 one-hour sessions, or six sessions if you’re undertaking reduced EDT. EDT can only be delivered by an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI). After each completed session, your ADI uploads the details to the EDT system. This allows your ADI, you and the RSA keep track of your progress and ensures the full programme is completed.

You can apply for your driving test while undertaking your EDT but you won’t be able to book an appointment until:

- your first learner permit is six months valid,

- you’ve completed all 12 EDT sessions, and

- these are showing in your MyEDT portal account

If you’ve been approved for reduced EDT, the 6-month rule doesn’t apply to you. However, you must have completed all 6 sessions and these need to be showing in your MyEDT account.

Pre Test driving lessons are highly recommended once they are conducted by an ADI. Remember there may be a considerable period of time between completing your EDT and obtaining your test date, during this period it is possible to form habits which may affect the result of your driving test.
